Benguela Cove’s head sommelier Denis Garret hails from France and is a member of Association des Sommeliers Paris Ile-de-France, the oldest sommelier association in the world as well as a member of Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac, an interprofessional association for the preservation and promotion of Cognac.
These prestigious memberships, coupled with many years experience, makes Denis very knowledgeable on champagne, cognac and wine.
As Master Sommelier for Benguela Cove and its associated properties of Benguela on Main and Benguela Brasserie & Restaurant, Denis is in the unique position of sourcing wines suited to each venue’s clientele and preferences. His well-travelled palate and keen sensory memory aids his selection of only the finest wines to pair with the delectable cuisine offered by each chef at their respective venues.
Denis’ love for South Africa and its plethora of delicious wines started in 1998, upon his first visit to the Western Cape where he spent 18 months travelling the many wine routes on his motorbike to taste all the wines listed in the Platter’s Guide. Having experienced the beauty of the Cape, Denis decided to stay and has been consulting in the country ever since. Denis also secured his South African Sommelier Association membership last year, further cementing his entrenchment in the South African wine industry.
In addition to his consulting, Denis also enjoys training the sommeliers of the future and has done so worldwide. At Benguela on Main he’s taken local junior sommelier Ndosi Gumede under his mentorship. Denis’ passion for wine is contagious and it is not hard to see his suitability to the bustling and growing Benguela group.
